DIY Chalkboard

Last Spring, I was inspired by all of my friends beautiful chalkboard finds. They all seemed to have the perfect color frame surrounding their boards. Every one I found was either to much for me to justify purchasing or was not what I wanted.

So, I decided to make my own. I looked into making my own chalkboard paint, but I ended up purchasing some to be more cost officiant. You can purchase the can or bottle of paint, or you can get spray paints. I went with a simple black paint to start.

I purchased a couple frames from Ikea and some colored spray paints. I chose a blue-green color that was perfect for spring. One afternoon, I sprayed the white frame with the blue-green spray paint and before it was completely dry I used a paper towel to gently wipe away various spots to give it a shabby chic look.  While the frame was drying, I painted the backing of the picture frame with the chalkboard frame. I found that several light coats cover more evenly than thick coats.

Here is the final product! I have used the frame for several events throughout the years. The color works well with our little house and for every season.

My roommate came home in the middle of my crafting and we could not help ourselves from experimenting on other surfaces. We tried glass, pottery, and wood.  It took everything in me to not paint a wall of the house!

What else would you like to see with a chalk board surface?

Sweetly yours,

Colleen
